Community Supported Agriculture - Why we do itThere are several concerns that face farmers each year; the cost of seed and labor, the weather and then what to grow, how much to grow and where to sell it. This year, we have farmers asking us what we want. We have been listening to you in our conversations at the Market and through the request list that's always up front by the register. We are planning a series of Farmer meetings in February to give them your feedack and ask them to supply us this year. One of the challenges is to convince the farmers to grow more varieties of produce(like heirlooms) and more different types of produce. We are also encouraging them to use hoop houses for early plant starts and stagger their plantings so that their growing seasons are extended. Suggesting changes in what they have grown and the way they have grown for years can be a challenge and is certain to lift an eyebrow or two. Our hope is to work with area farmers in providing what you are asking for - more variety! Please understand that what is offered in the CSA bags is always subject to what is available from the various local farmers and, of course, the weather! Also, if you choose to subscribe to the winter and spring CSAs we will try and get whatever is available locally first (remember it is off-season here) and then we work with small regional farmers in the south eastern coastal states to help provide variety. So, you may see things that don't grow around here - like oranges or grapefruit - that a small farmer grows in Florida.
